UFC / WSOF veteran fought for Pancrase between 2002 to 2003 and scored three consecutive wins. Its been almost 12 years since Okami last fought for Pancrase.
Okami signed with UFC back in 2006. He was released in 2013 and signed with WSOF in 2014. After losing to David Branch and Jon Fitch, Okami couldn’t get a fight in WSOF therefore decided to fight in Japan. Okami signed an one-fight deal with DEEP and fought Ryuta Sakurai earlier this year, and now, he is fighting for Pancrase.
Pancrase head Masakazu Sakai said, “we got a permission from WSOF”. Obviously, this means Okami is still under the WSOF contract and this also means its safe to assume that he did not sign a multi-fight deal with a 23-year old MMA promotion based in Tokyo.
If that is the case, then, Okami is not looking to get to the title shot against the current champion Akihiro Murayama. Instead, he just wants to be active, and looking for, perhaps, a right timing to get back into WSOF.
For Suzuki, this is a big opportunity.
He just lost a title yet Suzuki is getting a big fight against a big name. Beating Okami can be bigger than getting a title back from Murayama.
